Electrical panels are designed and assembled considering the environment and purpose. Accordingly, they have been classified into several determinants:

Classification of electrical panels based on usage:

Electrical panels are classified regarding their use to supply electrical energy. This includes the following classifications:

1. Main distribution boards

They are used to supply electrical panels like sub-distribution panels, main feeder panels, electrical meter panels, or all of them, with the needed electrical energy from the primary power source –the public network. The specific dimensions and technical features are determined in light of the estimated ampere value.

2. Sub-distribution boards

They are used to supply some electrical panels, which are the main feeder panels or electrical meter panels, with the needed electrical energy from the primary power source through the main distribution panel. The specific dimensions and technical features are determined in light of the estimated ampere value.

3. Main feeder board

It is used to supply the property or facility with the required electrical energy from the primary power source –the public network. The specific dimensions and technical features are determined in light of the estimated ampere value (3-phase subscription) that is required based on the total estimated electrical load of the property or facility.

4. Electrical dashboard

It is used to supply the residential, commercial, or administrative units inside the property with the needed electrical energy from the primary power source –the public network. The dimensions and technical features are determined considering the value of the property’s total estimated electrical load. The electrical panel can be public or separated regarding the property’s nature and how many subscribers.

5. External lighting panel street lighting

It is used to supply street lighting poles with the needed electrical energy from the primary power source –the public network. This panel contains many basic components that are described considering the value of the total estimated electrical load, as well as its dimensions in proportion to its internal components.

6. Power factor improvement panel

It is used to improve the low electrical power factor as a result of feeding the inductive loads with the needed electrical energy from the primary power source –the public network. Thus, it is important to mention that its dimensions and internal components description are determined based on the phase number, each stage capacity, and the stage total capacity, which are all designed in proportion to the value of the required

subscription.

7. Operation panel

It is used to supply one or more electrical loads with the needed electrical energy, which is often at the end of the flowchart near the electrical loads that are going to be used.

8. Connecting panel

It is used to connect two electrical energy sources in order to supply one or more electrical loads with the required electrical energy to start working.

9- Flip panel (ATS & MTS)

It is used to feed one or more electrical loads from more than one source of electrical energy so that the priority of load feeding is arranged as needed.

10. Protection panel

An electrical panel that is used to protect from fault currents or electrical load increase. It includes electrical components that allow for providing the necessary protections to ensure the quality of electrical loads.

11 . Control Panel

It is used to control the operational processes of electrical loads such as production lines. It simply includes electrical components that allow controlling the load operation either manually, automatically, or remotely.

12. Monitoring panel

It is an electrical panel used to monitor the electrical loads and take specific readings and measurements to give real indications about the progress of the operation process and to control the electrical loads that are connected to the primary power source.

Classification of electrical panels based on the materials:

Electrical panels are also classified regarding the material type the panel is produced of. They include the following categories:

1. Electrical panels produced of PVC:

This type of electrical panels is available in specific dimensions. It is used with certain types of subscriptions and several required conditions in the panels assembly places.

2. Galvanized iron electrical panels:

This type of electrical panels is considered regarding specific dimensions that fit with the assembly place. There are fixed dimensions commensurate with the capacity of the subscription or the meter counter. This type of panels has many standards and conditions that must be met in the electrical panel.

3. Electrical panels to be supplied upon request:

This type of electrical panel is produced upon request when it is needed. It is supplied separately and assembled later.

In addition to usage and materials, electrical panels are also classified regarding (IK, IP)

Electrical panel’s protection degree is determined in proportion to the nature of the assembly place and the external factors that affect during the assembly time.

1- Ingress Protection (IP XY)

It is an international standard that is used to describe how much the electrical panel is protected against dust and water.

• The first number (X) represents the degree of protection of the electrical panel against dust. It starts from 0 to number 6.

• The second number (Y) represents the degree of protection of the electrical panel against liquids. It starts from 0 to 8.

2- Impact Protection (IK XX)

The electrical panels protection degree against mechanical impact is represented as K00 starting from 00 to 10.

Electrical panels contain many components including the following:

● Bus Bar

● Electric knives

● Electric circuit breakers

● Insulators

● Current and voltage transformers

● Fuses

● Measuring devices (such as measuring voltage and electric current)

● Auxiliary control equipment (such as relays, timers, etc.)

● Protection and alarm devices

● Electric control circuits
