Why is it important to apply inspections and tests on mechanical equipment?

The quality of products and equipment is considered one of the top most factors of any company’s success. Therefore, it is necessary for achieving high-quality and safe-for-use products to make testing and inspection of the product and equipment before delivering to the customer. This  ensures that the delivered products or equipment are matching with the specifications and standards of the requirement of the organization or customer.

The meaning of inspection and testing:

Inspection and testing are to determine and measure the quality level of the products by an independent third-party, and that may involve testing the product or equipment for quality and function, documenting damage, checking labeling details, and general condition of product or equipment. Also, the activities of engineering inspection comprise the tests, gauges,  and measurements applied to certain equipment or products in regard to an activity or object.

The purpose of mechanical equipment inspection:

The purpose of mechanical equipment inspection is to identify whether work equipment can be properly operated, adjusted, and maintained safely, with any defect discovered and repaired before it poses a health and safety risk. 

Does all mechanical equipment require an official inspection?

No, not all work equipment requires formal inspection and testing to guarantee safe use by an employee, in some statuses, a quick visual examination before utilization is sufficient. However, the inspection and testing of mechanical equipment are necessary where there are significant dangers (for example, of major injury)  on the health and safety of employees and properties of the organization.

Important Advice: If the Work equipment requires inspection do not use it until you know the inspection has been done.

The negative consequences of ignoring the mechanical inspection may include:

  • Sort of equipment:

Depending on the type of equipment can determine the level of care needed for equipment. For example, excavators and trucks require to be inspected more frequently than hand tools because they are anticipated to work without defeat. In general, all equipment used in high-danger activities and operations needs to be inspected frequently more than other equipment. 

  • Equipment location:

Devices located in hard-to-reach places may not be visible until something goes wrong. For example, an operator may not realize that his backhoe is leaking fluid until he breaks down while digging at a construction site. In this case, the operator needs to know that there is liquid on the cab floor before the liquid causes any damage.

There are four stages of inspection and testing:

  • Semi-finished product Inspection and testing.
  • Inspection and testing of the final product before sending it to the customer.

In some cases, if the customer does not feel satisfied with the quality of the product, then the inspection and testing are carried out on the customer’s premises.
